Battle of the Superphones: Palm Pre vs. Apple iPhone - which is a better Web browsing device?- There are already countless reviews of the newly announced Palm Pre available online. Rather than write another one, we instead are going to focus on what we, and we hope, our readers, are most interested in: how does the Pre fare as a web browsing device. In particular, we're going to test how well it does against its arch-rival, the iPhone. Can the Pre out-iPhone the iPhone? We're going to ignore the app store, the widgets, the battery life, the media player and instead focus on web browsing.

Hotbeds of Mobile Development- When you register for mobiForge, we ask you a few optional questions about who and where you are. This is not because we are running some elaborate email spam scheme, but basically because we like graphs. In particular, we ask you to provide your city and country. We thought we'd let you know where the hot beds of mobile development are around the world - at least for a sample of the 22,000 users who've registered on mobiForge.

Introducing the new DeviceAtlas Data Explorer- We teased you about this a few months ago and we've now finally finished! DeviceAtlas v2.1 offers analytics tools to explore the mobile device information in its database. In the video below, James and Andrea give you a teaser of how it works, and talk through some of the cool new tricks. We're going live next Monday, and we'll announce here when it's available. UPDATE: we've gone live.

An Operator Decides to be Polite… - Say what you will about the network operators with whom we have to play in the mobile space, but every now and again they do think of the developer community before implementing changes that may impact us all. Case in point, our friends over at AT&T devCentral recently sent out an announcement to the developer community about changes that will be coming as a result of some modifications to their gateway.

RIP Openwave Mobile Browser- So as we all get spun up in the excitement and wonder over iPhone 2.0, and as Apple appears to continue its ascendancy in the mobile space, I feel compelled to share about a company that’s gone in the other direction. I don’t know if folks don’t care, or there really isn’t any impact as a result of it, but either way I feel inclined to spend some pixels on a recent development.

Server-side predictive text- We've decided to try an experiment on find.mobi: server-side T9: if you type in a purely numeric query we will try to see if it maps to any common words in the English language, and offer you a link to the search. Thus searching for 46835 will ask you if you meant "hotel" and "7464 8663 " will suggest "ring tone".

dotMobi Loves Mowser- At long last we can announce some great news! dotMobi is acquiring the well-known Mowser service that provides content adaptation services for mobile. We're very excited about this. Russell Beattie and Mike Rowehl are both very talented mobile gurus and they'll be joining the dotMobi team to help us do cool things with their technology. We did this deal because Mowser fits really well into lots of our current projects. Firstly, the Mowser directory, search and listings will be integrated straight into our newly launched find.mobi service.

Open Sesame- There’s lots of chatter about ‘openness’ in the mobile space recently. If you’re listening to the media, you’re hearing it both on the handset and the network side. We’ve got the 700MHz spectrum auction that’s just wrapped up in which Google so cleverly forced the ‘openness’ provision to kick in. Verizon, the largest operator in the US (and the big winner in the C block that’s now required to be ‘open’), making statements that they’re going to allow ‘any device’ on their network.

The short comings of desktops- Why are people constantly talking about the limitations and short comings of mobile phones? I always think the other way around.

Welcome to our 10,000th user!- Hello everyone. We just reached new milestone - our 10,000th dev.mobi subscriber. We launched dev.mobi just over a year ago. We thought it was important for the mobile development community to have a single, independent source of information to help make the whole medium a success. It's fine having brilliant handset-specific and network-specific sites, but at the end of the day, which developers only develop for one make of handset or one network operator? Very few. So hopefully we fill a well-needed role in your bookmarks list :-) I'll be honest. We never realised how big it would become. This week, we had our 10,000th user signup, which is way more than most of the other independent mobile communities, and way beyond our original dreams. And user/10000? He's James Bajic from Adshires, Manchester, UK. Welcome to him, and to all of our new and loyal members. We're growing faster than ever, and, as always, our thanks for your support and enthusiasm. We're glad you enjoy using the site, and please let us know what more we can do... we are only as good as our community :-)
