Why are people constantly talking about the limitations and short comings of mobile phones? I always think the other way around.

The mobile is of course a separate communication channel with its own unique characteristics. But if we really have to compare it to something, we tend to compare it to a desktop PC. When people does this comparison, it results in a list of limitations of the mobile channel.

When I do the same exersise I come up with this list:

  • The PC is shared among several people, and one person usually have several PCs. One PC at home shared with the family and one PC at work. Difficult to be personal.
  • Whenever you need to use a PC you have to boot it. Battery time is too short.
  • You cant use a PC when you're on the move. It is either on your desk, on your lap, or in your bag.
  • There is so few PCs in the world. Only 850 M. compared to 3,5 B mobile phones.
  • A PC is expensive to buy, not everyone can afford it.
  • A PC is turned off most of the time.
  • PCs are unsafe. Virus, worms, trojans all over the place.
  • It's too difficult to instantly get in touch with your friends. Usually both of you have to have booted your PC and have an Internet connection before its close to being fun.
  • When you finally have bought a PC, you need all this other stuff like, printer, scanner, webcam, internet connection, software etc., before you can use it to anything.
Who would bother to make applications for this kind of machine? Not me... too limited. :)
