DeviceAtlas 2.4 adds Sprint data- DeviceAtlas 2.4 is our latest update and it comes with a very exciting new partner, the US carrier Sprint. Sprint has a very good developer site with many tools specific to their portal and devices and we are very excited to have the opportunity to add their device profiles to DeviceAtlas. Starting from today we will be adding data directly from Sprint that will either be mapped to existing devices thus adding a new source of data, and we will also be defining new devices that we did not know about before.

Kind of a "sunshine transcoder story"- I guess many of you have been following discussions on various attempts by network operators to transcode desktop web sites and squeeze them on to a mobile device, without respecting the intentions of content owners. The case I'll be talking about is the TeliaSonera case, and their "SurfOpen" service. First time around, the launch caused an uprising among the content owners forcing TeliaSonera to go offline with SurfOpen. Now SurfOpen is launched again with a more reasonable approach.

Drupal 5 - Progressive downloads in "private" mode- Just a quick one to let anyone using Drupal know that it *is* possible to serve files using HTTP_RANGE! After a little bit of digging around, Andrea and I found this patch file (attached to this post), which allows Drupal 5 to serve files to range-supporting clients. Why bother with this post? Well, the iPhone doesn't support file-downloading, nor does it support multimedia file-streaming, but it does support progressive download via http!

Going Native (or you had me at 'hello') Part I- So I’ve got a confession to make here, I’ve been working on this bit for the better part of a month now in fits and starts, and having a hard time getting my head around it all. I started out with the notion of a quick primer comparing what it would take to knock out a quick ‘hello world’ on the various native platforms out there if you were to decide to do something other than a web app.

DeviceAtlas 2.2 adds video and streaming properties and tests- 2009 has just started and we already have a new update for DeviceAtlas. Today we are completely reviewing all the properties related to video and streaming. We have done a deep analysis of what we had and what was needed and we think we have done a great job. We have worked closely with our friends at Mobizoft and we have created a handful of new properties that are covering MUCH better what you can do on a mobile device with media files.
