Mobile Web Design

Mobile Web Design Book CoverA special treat for mobiForge users. We have the pleasure of bringing you a number of excerpts from Cameron Moll's recently published book Mobile Web Design.

Mobile Web Design is aimed at anyone "in a position to develop for, manage, or give advice regarding your organization’s foray into—or extended development of—a web strategy for mobile devices".

The book covers a variety of topics related to mobile web design, starting with some background and the current state-of-the-art, and stresses the importance of context when developing for mobile. It then delivers practical advice, including the pros and cons of various distinct strategies for mobile web design. Excellent hands-on information in XHTML and CSS development and testing is presented. The reader is introduced to handy tools and methods, and is treated to very useful code samples. Other current technologies beyond XHTML and CSS are covered, including Messaging, Widgets, AJAX, and Flash Lite among others.

Mobile Web Design is concise and well-written. It is full of useful stats, code samples, and features plenty of screenshots from many devices ranging from Smartphones, to low-end devices, and of course the iPhone. The book is available to buy in print or as a PDF E-book at http://www.mobilewebbook.com/ and is a must-have for anyone developing for mobile.

Cameron has kindly given us the permission to reproduce one of his chapters. Over the next few weeks we will present serialised extracts from the chapter "Beyond Simple XHTML Pages". A link to the excerpts which comprise a full chapter of the book, can be found below (login to read). Enjoy!
