Is it possible to get Mobile Network specific information from the mobile/pda that runs my web application? For example, is it somehow possible to see the Serving Cell, Neighboring Cells, Receive level, etc.? If it is possible, then how do I do it?

Best Regards

It depends on the device, and whether your application has access to the device APIs which expose this information. More and more applications are appearing that do make use of the cell-tower id to provide location data (the best known being Google Maps). Once you have this, you could need a Cell-id database which maps location to cell-id. One such database is OpenCellId http://www.opencellid.org/

Imagine if we could have access to these type of information directly from the mobile - in the same fashion as you can check if it is a mobile device, or what the screen size is (I only have experience with ASP.NET in this regard). All these parameters are already present on the Mobile Station itself, since it is doing the measurements on neighbouring cells, their receive levels, and much more.

In my view, dotMobi is the way forward for mobile applications, as it only requires a browser (or thin-client) in the mobile device, and then you can run the application - no installation issues, no developing for a specific type or brand of phone only, and a lot less compatibility issues (personal view)!

Just imagine the types of applications:
- games that can take you location in consideration.
- applications such as "where is the closest bank, OTM, restaurant, etc."
- ICQ - where is my friends, kids, family...

This will put a whole new dimension on mobile web sites and mobile applications.

So the question is, how and where do we start to influence the standards so that we sometime in the future will have access to this type of information in a standard way on mobile devices?

Hi Guys,

Here is a command that is supposed to work to get the users Mobile Number. Only problem is the Networks in South Africa block that information for Privacy reasons which i understand 100% and i can imagine it is similiar in Countries around the world.

The header's name is: x-up-calling-line-id:

There are a large number of X headers some of which work for some devices while others seem not to work.

Hope it helps, and please let me know if you come right with it. Would be interesting to know for which Mobile Networks the above works with.
