Hello everyone,
we're looking for a content management system to manage a large number of different mobile websites simultaneously. I have so far played around with Joomla, Drupal and Expression Engine, but neither could satisfy our needs very well - usually because the multi-site part was too hard to set up for each new domain.
We're looking for the following features specifically:
- capable of managing multiple sites, each on its own domain, from a single installation
- capable of content adaption based on the User-Agent header, ideally works with WURFL
- extendable, so we can for example include our own billing service
- ideally offers "beautified" URLs and other SEO features
Can be either open-source, free software or commercial software. We don't care what application server or webserver it needs to run or which language it's written in, as long as we can make it run on a Gentoo Linux system. ;)
As I'm a little overwhelmed by all the choices out there, I'm hoping that someone has an idea and can tell me which software might be suitable for our needs. I really appreciate all the pointers I can get.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,
Use Drupal! There is a bit of a learning curve but once you're over that it just keeps on giving.
Drupal has very strong and well-structured support for multiple sites - it's actually pretty easy once you know how!
Support here too. We have module to acheive this with DeviceAtlas (could probably be adapted for WURFL).
There are modules for just about everything. Builind a module for your billing service should be straightforward.

Hi All,
Looking through all the CMS threads and still looking for CMS/content delivery/Device detection...
I have a weekend project to enable a web site to support downloading of j2me files.
I had a joomla developer doing this for me but he has ‘walked’ and now I urgently need to set this up.
I was thinking Joomla 1.5 but happy to take advice.
I want to be able to make available about 15 [or more] separate j2me programs – each one has 10 versions depending on phone screen size.
I want to be able to enable the user to select a file they want – then add their phone number to then push/send an SMS with the link to the users phone.
The user opens the link which takes them to a download page where the device type is detected and based on the screen size – the user is provided a download link.
It is a bit like a shopping cart – but delivery is via SMS link and products for the moment are free to download.
Is Joomla the best CMS to use or Drupal?
Has anyone done delivery via SMS link?
Is there a turnkey solution for mobile deployment of content?
Would anyone be prepared to assist me?
I have read the various articles on this excellent site – I just need some hand holding / good advice / assistance.
Thx all.

Hi majorsoft,
In order to send a link to mobile device, the best way is to use wap-push message. You can use simple sms also but in some device, the url is not clickable and the user must write down the url and type it again to the browser. So the best solution is wap-push.
After the user visit your mobile site (the url must have some parameters in order to find which j2me file he/she want)
you need to detect the device (using WURLF).
After detection you can find if the device support java, the Midp version, and the screen size.
So you have screen size, MIDP version, and from url parameter the j2me file. Just create dynamically the page with the appropriate link to that j2me file.
Hope that helps you.

Hey! Thanks for your answer.
We've already tried Drupal, and I agree it would have been a really great CMS for our needs, if it weren't so difficult to set up new sites/domains. I need a new Apache config file and a new settings.php file for each new domain, and that is something we just can't do here. The people who are going to be using this system should be able to set up new sites/domains without the help of a sysadmin. :-/
I think we may just have to roll our own after all.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi, Major
i personally prefer joomla and i am also interested in the same topic of a turnkey solution for mobile content delivery via sms, and also turnkey solution for handling SMS Chat, quizzes, votes etc.. i have been doing a lot of research regarding this and i have came across interesting solutions, so far i was able to configure my web server to host java app's , 3gp and other mobile content and deliver them via sms "url link" like Elias said you need WAP push to be able to send to devices that doesn't select the url i have different online converters without no success, there are some readymade scripts that performs all this. any way i don't mind sharing the solutions i have it would be nice from you to share yours as well, i don't want to post any urls for other sites here, i am new to the forum and don't know the rules yet, you can contact me on skype to discuss more details skype ID: best-cairo
