Quick question – how is the estimated speed calculation section on the ready.mobi tool calculated?
It seems clear enough how the page size is calculated (i.e. mark-up + images + css) but I don’t know how you go from there to estimated speed.

I’m having a hard time matching up the estimated speed with empirical tests on handsets for certain types of pages.
I have an idea why this is which I’ll flesh out but it would help if I knew how ready.mobi was doing this already.

Hi Paschal, we take the page size as you have mentioned, and we try to estimate the number of connections made for the page and account for this too. Would be very interested to hear any feedback you can give.

Dear Ruadhan
basically I do have the same question as Pascal namely how ready.mobi esitmates the speed on mobiReady. I am working on a survey of mobile job websites and I just have some trouble in estimating a standardized but realisitc time for download. Thus I'd love to know wich factors you take into account and to what extend.

Would be glad to hear any further informaitons from you.

Hi Susanne,

We do a very rough estimate on the download time (and will be first to admit that it might not always be accurate)

Off the top of my head, the factors we take into account include the number of redirects a page makes, typical connection time, and the size of the page, (including images, scripts, CSS etc.)
