OSX the OS that powers the iPhone will only work on an iPhone. The Android OS will on on a variety of smart phones made by a variety of manufacturers. A Choice of only two carriers if you opt for an iPhone vs a choice of all 4 National carriers if you choose an Android device. The Android Market used to badly lag behind the iPhone App Store but no so much any more.
Best Practice for Mobile Search

I'm trying to figure out the best way to server up site content for a mobile user.

It makes most sense to create a responsive design of the site using media queries to server up content accordingly for mobile users.
That way, weather searching for keywords on the mobile or desktop browser, you'll always be getting the same content.
The downside seems to be the mobile user will still have to download the entire page slowing load time.

Alternatively a mobile friendly version of the site could be created in a new directory or subdomain.

Web + Mobile version on same domain - Duplicate content?

Hi all
I manage a small site and we are currently both mobile and web enabled, we have device detection capabilities and currently switch the CSS on the site depending on what browser you are using, mobile or web.
We are now going to build out a full scale website which will probably have slightly different content (but still very similar), and we'd like to keep the same url for both mobile and web traffic.
So in an ideal world:
from pc browser: see mydomain with web content.
from mobile : see mydomain with MOBILE content.
