Dev.mobi newsletter May 2008

Another month or so has passed since our last mailing, and our fuzzy newsletter alarm clock is bleating meekly, so I know it's around about that time again, and you must be sort of expecting this email...

We've had a fantastically exciting month at dotMobi this time round, here are the choice cuts...

1. Dev.mobi on the road
2. Dotmobi loves Mowser
3. DeviceAtlas secret analytics feature
4. Dev.mobi tweets
5. Find by number
6. New content
7. Ready.mobi v2.1

1. Dev.mobi is on the road

First up this month, we have a dotMobi developer event announcement. Dev.mobi is holding developer events in San Francisco, New York, and London. At these events you can learn the easiest ways to build cross-platform, device-aware mobile content, and about the wealth of free resources that the dotMobi developer forum makes available to the mobile development community.

These events will cover a variety of topics, including development tools, reference guides, training and certification to help your company and your clients get the most out of a mobile presence.

And before each event, we'll have a light breakfast for you so can roll right out of bed and straight to the event. The events are all FREE, but space is limited, and on a first come first served basis, so register early!

Details for the three planned events are:

  • SF Bay Area - Friday, 30th May 2008 from 0900 to 1200, Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park, CA. Signup here.
  • New York - Thursday, 12th June 2008 from 0900 to 1200, The Westin New York at Times Square.Signup here.
  • London - Friday, 27th June 2008 from 0900 to 1200, The Radisson Edwardian Mountbatten Hotel (Seven Dials just north of Covent Garden). Signup here.

2. Dotmobi loves Mowser

It's official! After news that Mowser was winding down (and exaggerated reports of the death of the mobile web!), dotMobi and Mowser have become happy bedfellows. Russell Beattie & Mike Rowehl are joining us for a while to help get us set up with this cool technology.

But why Mowser & dotMobi? Actually, Mowser makes an excellent complement to a number of projects here at dotMobi: find.mobi will immediately benefit from the Mowser directory, and Mowser will also provide us with more ways to use DeviceAtlas for creating device-adapted content. We also want to be able to help mobilise legacy websites so that site owners can quickly join the mobile revolution. A happy result for all parties!

3. DeviceAtlas secret analytics feature

James has leaked out the first glimpse of a phenomenal analytics feature sitting quietly behind the scenes in DeviceAtlas. Suppose you want to find out the most popular screen dimensions so that you know what kind of devices to target your content for? Or what about finding the most widely supported markup languages?

These and any other device property analyses are made simple, and DeviceAtlas will effortlessly generate a bubble graph or histogram showing the required distributions as appropriate. You really can find out everything you need to know about the world's devices in DeviceAtlas.

Now, this feature hasn't been officially unveiled yet, but here's a tip: it's all in the URL ;-)

4. Dev.mobi tweets

We're now twittering! Well, to be more precise, dev.mobi is twittering. We hooked it up so that all our content comes out the other end of twitter as a tweet. So now you have another easy way to keep track of dev.mobi content. Follow us at http://twitter.com/devmobi, and you'll be up-to-date with all our content.

5. Find by number

While the find.mobi team has been busy integrating some Mowser goodies, they have still found time to implement some new features, including server side T9. Not quite sure what it is? Visit find.mobi and enter a numeric query - find.mobi will check for mappings to common words. No doubt '739' will be popping up all over our logs - everybody's at it; that's just human nature I suppose!

6. New content

Want to stream content to the iPhone? Need to provide pay-for-download mobile content? Look no further - a new article "Content delivery for Mobile Devices" contains plenty of juicy code snippets and practical tips to achieve just these tasks.

Have you ever received an SMS from your network operator containing settings for your phone? Ever wondered how this works? "Email configuration via SMS" reveals everything you need to know about configuring a mobile devices email via the power of SMS.

We've had loads of blog posts recently, far too many to mention here. (Read them at http://dev.mobi/blog). The latest addition to our team, Claire O'Gorman, has made her debut blog entry on dev.mobi, introducing a free eBook, Ten Mistakes in Mobile Web Marketing.

7. Ready.mobi v2.1

Finally, a small update on ready.mobi. Version 2.1 went live last week. It contained mostly bug-fixes, but we're cranking up development and we're currently working on a web API which will open the door to all kinds of cool mashups.

Well that wraps it up for this month. Any suggestions or ideas please feel free to email us any time (tech@mtld.mobi) or leave comments on the forums at http://dev.mobi/forum.

Best regards,
