Understanding UI in Android

In the second part of our four part series on Android user-interface, Wei-Meng Lee returns to reveal all there is to know about using 'Views', those widgety building blocks that you use to build your Android interface. Interesting widgets covered include Progress bars and Auto-complete views and as usual, there are plenty of code snippets for you to chew on!

Testing Mobile Web Sites in Firefox

This month Mike McQuillan, Technical Director at m-send, makes his debut on mobiForge, detailing how to make the most of the Firefox browser in testing your mobile Web sites. He covers various indespensable plugins such as Modify Headers, and walks through the setup for mobile testing. Has he missed any tricks? Let us know if you have any further tips.

Getting started with J2ME

Another new author on mobiForge this month is Soma Ghosh. Soma gives us a gentle introduction to the world of J2ME applications. Plenty of code is included, and you will learn how to setup your environment and develop your first 'Hello World' J2ME Midlet.

Verizon Wireless Opens Up

In a truly positive move by the largest US operator, Verizon Wireless has opened its arms and embraced the developer community. Some of the things they are doing include exposing the core assets of their platform, such as billing, location and messaging. Ron Mandel has all the details of this new initiative. Great news for developers everywhere and hopefully other operators will follow suit.

Planning & Buying Mobile Media

Also updated today, our mobile-readiness testing tool mobiReady has had a makeover. Most significantly you can now post markup directly to the service. This should help in cases where you don't have your site on a live or public server. Other updates include:

Interface clean-up
Improved ease-of-use site testing capability
Display of HTTP response headers along with test results
