DeviceAtlas 2.4.1 Released

Late yesterday evening, some of you may have noticed that DeviceAtlas went offline for a couple of hours - now that it's back on its feet again I can tell you that DeviceAtlas 2.4.1 has now been released!

2.4.1 is mainly a maintainence release, but we've managed to squeeze in a few exciting little nuggets that we're sure you're going to love.

DeviceAtlas 2.4 adds Sprint data

DeviceAtlas 2.4 is our latest update and it comes with a very exciting new partner, the US carrier Sprint. Sprint has a very good developer site with many tools specific to their portal and devices and we are very excited to have the opportunity to add their device profiles to DeviceAtlas. Starting from today we will be adding data directly from Sprint that will either be mapped to existing devices thus adding a new source of data, and we will also be defining new devices that we did not know about before.

DeviceAtlas to add TAC for device recognition

Last week was the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. Thousands of mobile developers, marketers and geeks met in the beautiful Fira area. dotMobi was there too and among the other things we announced the cooperation with the GSMA (also on of the dotMobi investors) to provide the TAC database in DeviceAtlas.

DeviceAtlas 2.3 Release

The 2.3 release of DeviceAtlas brings with it the next major release of our API. Version 2.3 is being released as a Beta to allow users to familiarise themselves with the new features and adapt their implementations to take advantage of these.

DeviceAtlas 2.2 adds video and streaming properties and tests

2009 has just started and we already have a new update for DeviceAtlas. Today we are completely reviewing all the properties related to video and streaming. We have done a deep analysis of what we had and what was needed and we think we have done a great job. We have worked closely with our friends at Mobizoft and we have created a handful of new properties that are covering MUCH better what you can do on a mobile device with media files.

About 2 weeks ago we introduced something that we thought was very exciting, a new way to visualise data in DeviceAtlas, we called it Data Explorer. DeviceAtlas 2.1 brings some VERY exciting features that kept us awake during the last few nights and we hope that the results will also keep you awake at night looking at how you can improve your mobile sites and contents.

First the less exciting part, we have made the signup process for Developer licences much easier, now all that is required is to accept the EULA and you're on. We REALLY want everyone to get a licence and get started. We have also streamlined some other portions of the purchase process and we hope this will make the navigation easier for you.

We're thrilled to launch the new version of our award-winning DeviceAtlas platform. Version 2.0 is a huge step forward for us, and we hope it's going to change the way you think about mobile device information.

Since we launched DeviceAtlas at the start of the year, we've been working hard to source mobile device information from all over the world. Take a look at the footer of the site and you'll see the logos of handset manufacturers, mobile operators and leading vendors who've all helped us enormously to do this.

Sony Ericsson joins DeviceAtlas

Today we have added a new source to DeviceAtlas and we think it's very exciting. Sony Ericsson via their developer site is officially joining DeviceAtlas providing profiles for their own devices. Check out the P1i for example or the W550i and you will see information from Sony Erisson.

TADA - Alive and kicking, and DA 2.0 (preview)

The DeviceAtlas 2.0 Preview was released on Monday, and with it, access to our TA-DA test suite was opened up to the unwashed masses.

A total of 5 new test have been added to the list, which is due grow further with the full 2.0 release due in the coming weeks.

Back in June we announced the launch of TA-DA, our own test suite for mobile devices. We followed up with a little tutorial.

Despite the summer, the sun and everything else (ok, alright, there is not much sun in Ireland, but we DO go on vacation sometimes) we worked hard in the last couple of months and in fact we are ready to release yet another improvement to DeviceAtlas.

When we initially released DeviceAtlas back in February we announced three different API's, Java, PHP and .NET. From the beginning we knew that the Ruby and Python communities would have been knocking at our door and in fact we have not been sitting staring at the wall. The initial API's have been updated and streamlined and now we come with two new flavours that should be welcomed by many web developers.

What a week at dotMobi and we are still not done with the updates. In fact we just completed the update of DeviceAtlas to version 1.2 and there are quite a few changes.

We always thought of DeviceAtlas as being more about device 'intelligence' than merely device 'data'. Being able to see and interpret patterns in the data helps developers make really smart design decisions, rather than just react, at run-time, to whatever turns up at their site.

So we've been putting a lot of effort into the analytics features of the platform. Currently we're trying out one- and two-dimensional analysis of device model populations.

Full list of devices is now updated and shows vendor logos
Device list is visible to users who have not yet logged in
Volantis data is being imported, about 2000 devices are already mapped to existing devices and you will see our total number of devices growing quickly in the next few days. We should reach the 5000 mark!
Some users reported issues with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, these should be fixed now

DeviceAtlas implementation of the W3C Simple API Recommendation

It is almost midnight in Dublin, almost 1am in Italy and we are still busy preparing what we think is a very exciting release. We have worked hard in the W3C in the last year together with some of the greatest players of this industry (Fundacion CTIC, MobileAware, Volantis, Telefonica, to name a few) and the results are eventually coming.

DeviceAtlas 1.1 now with Argogroup data

A new major DeviceAtlas release is now ready for usage. Version 1.1 includes data from Argogroup adding information to more than 650 devices and more than 100 new devices.

Despite the date, this is not a joke, we have just released a new update for DeviceAtlas and for our JSON file, of course.

Today's update includes improvements to the web site, but most of all makes available information from our partners at Argogroup adding great value and trust to our database.

Updates keep flowing to the production server as we add new features to the database and to the web interface.

Today we have released a few updates that you can see on our website. A lot have asked for more detailed information about properties and while we thought most names would be self-explanatory it is always good to have a quick handbook to look at.

DeviceAtlas tutorial for PHP

We've just published the first tutorial that explains how to use the DeviceAtlas API in your applications. We open our "tutorials section" with PHP basic integration and of course Java and .NET will follow shortly. Remember that the different API's are very consistent (respecting language syntax and coding standards, of course) so it should be possible to take inspiration from the PHP tutorial and apply it to other languages.

A few minor issues were reported in the purchase process so we decided to release a quick fix. I have also updated the official changelog, but let me explain a few new things that we just added.

Users are now allowed to edit the shipping address, so if you need to change or update it, you can do it from your user's homepage in DeviceAtlas. VAT number is now also stored as part of your address, so you can edit from the same page.

Today we have released a minor update for DeviceAtlas. It was a quick release, but we wanted to provide updates immediately.

If you had downloaded the API we strongly suggest that you update to the latest version. Also make sure you download the latest JSON file from the internal link "My Licences" (available only if you have purchased a commercial licence or the developer licence).

Today we are announcing DeviceAtlas which is the result of many months of work here at dotMobi. It all officially started in June 2007, but the plan within the company had already started quite a few months earlier.

It has been a real team work, Jo Rabin and I worked actively in the W3C DDWG to make sure there would be a Core Vocabulary and a Simple API.

Building a test suite might seem like a simple task at first sight, but unfortunately it is not like that. First of all you need to decide what properties you want to test, and since we are talking about mobile devices there are so many things to test that it becomes hard to make a decision.
