We have just published another extract from Cameron Moll's excellent book, Mobile Web Design. (Thanks Cameron!) In this next installment from the chapter "Beyond Simple XHTML Pages", topics covered include SVG, Flash Lite, and Location Awareness. Feels like a bit of an SVG-fest here lately, but as Ronan points out, maybe quite a few of us could be paying more attention to this technology.

SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is "a language for describing two-dimensional graphics and graphical applications in XML."³ Or in English, SVG enables a designer to render vector images and animations within the browser using numerical coordinates rather than pixels. SVG Tiny is a baseline profile of SVG, implementable on a range of devices, and described by the W3C thusly:

It has always surprised me that the mobile industry has not made better use of SVG. SVG is very well suited to publishing rich content on mobile devices for a number of reasons: compact, lightweight, open standard, reasonably good device support.

We've just published an article on mobiForge that summarises the capabilities of SVG and how best to take advantage of it for mobile web applications.

It has always surprised me that the mobile industry has not made better use of SVG. On the face of it, SVG is perfectly suited to publishing rich content on mobile devices for a number of reasons:

It is a compact way of representing vector graphics
SVG graphics (in keeping with the name) can be scaled to arbitrary sizes, removing some of issues with screen dimension proliferation on mobile devices
