About 2 weeks ago we introduced something that we thought was very exciting, a new way to visualise data in DeviceAtlas, we called it Data Explorer. If you missed it, you can watch a screencast that explains how it works and gives a few ideas of what you can do, see Introducing the new DeviceAtlas Data Explorer.
We thought it was all very cool, but of course, once you open a door like that you immediately get requests to add something that will make it even more interesting. We are not releasing a new version, yet, but we have added one simple property to DeviceAtlas that we think will make all those sexy graphs even sexier. We are introducing the year a device was released, for example while browsing the data we wondered who was the most prolific vendor in each year and the answer is…. Well, go see for yourself (and notice how some brands like BenQ appeared and disappeared in a few years).
Devices released per year is very interesting probably for marketing divisions or managers that are thinking which devices they should target for, but what about mobile web and browsing? When the first devices with a colour screen were released, the main question was if GIF was supported, but these days GIF is supported by the vast majority devices (if not all). See for example the growth of GIF support between 2000 and 2006. See how the number of devices NOT supporting XHTML Basic has decreased over years.
Are you into design? Advertisement? See the most common screen width per year.
I don’t want to spoil all the best graphs that we have, but I think I gave you an idea of what you can see.
Of course, this is only the beginning, we actually still need to collect a lot of values of release years for many devices, so don’t forget that you can quickly add value to DeviceAtlas with the new editing capabilities of the web interface (and thanks to the great design our friends at Yiibu did!).
