You may have heard – or seen the press release http://www.afilias.info/mobi+acquisition – that dotMobi has been acquired by Afilias.
Afilias is a company well known in the domain industry for providing Internet infrastructure services. They’re also the registry operator for .INFO and 14 other top-level domains together supporting 15 million domains across the Web. Afilias and dotMobi have worked closely together since the Mobi JV (predecessor to dotMobi) was started by Nokia, Vodafone and Microsoft to apply to ICANN for the .mobi domain in 2004. Afilias also provided registry services in support of the .mobi launch in 2006, and continues to do so today.
While the acquisition of dotMobi by a domain company will bring a bigger emphasis on the .mobi domain, it does not mean that dotMobi is lessening its commitment to the mobile developer community. The dotMobi company’s day-to-day operations – including tools like mobiReady and DeviceAtlas — will continue to run just as they are now. In fact, if I weren’t writing about it, you likely wouldn’t have noticed.
So if you were nervous when you heard, you can relax. And if you hadn’t heard, you can remain relaxed!
