Open source LBS

Location based services are becoming more and more prevalent every day, with innovative applications that make use of location, like FireEagle, and Google Maps for Mobile, popping up all the time. We’ve just published the first part of a two-part piece on Location via CellID, and the open source database of CellIDs, OpenCellID.

This article, written by Thomas Landspurg of 8Motions, and who leads the OpenCellID project, is a great introduction to CellID based location. It shows just how easy it is to get up and running with with LBS on mobile devices. Look out for part II which shows how we can overlay a user’s position on a map à la Google Maps’ My Location feature, but written entirely with open source software.

In recognition of the importance of Location technologies in mobile, we’ve set up a dedicated Location forum on the site, and we plan to follow up with plenty more content covering LBS. Stay tuned…
