On the final day of this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Afilias team took to the stage to present DeviceAssure.
DeviceAssure allows for the identification of counterfeit and non-standard devices in real-time. This can help secure your network against the many threats posed by such devices, which were explained in the presentation.
It’s estimated that the annual cost in revenues lost to counterfeit devices is over €45 Billion, with over 180 million fake smartphones sold across the globe each year. As companies embrace the BYOD (bring your own device) model, a rogue device accessing a private network is a huge risk.
A fake iPhone costs as little as $100, and when we got our hands on one and looked at what was inside, the threats were clear.
For business, fake devices introduce a high-risk attack vector, and can allow malware on to the network. The device itself may contain back doors allowing for data theft. Financial services and online brands could also suffer where user trust is paramount. If a device contains keyloggers, trojans or other nasties, details of logins and passwords are vulnerable.
DeviceAssure can also benefit Government and regulators, secondary device markets and manufacturers themselves, who could take some blame when these devices inevitably fail.
