Mobile growth data from comScore M:Metrics

comScore M:Metrics recently reported that in June 2008, 20.8 million U.S. mobile subscribers and 4.5 million European mobile phone subscribers accessed search during the month, an increase of 68 and 38 percent from June 2007, respectively.

The U.K. had the highest penetration of mobile subscribers using search at 9.5 percent, followed closely by the U.S. at 9.2 percent.

In a related story, Herve Le Jouan, MD of ComScore Europe (which just acquired M: Metrics), compares growth rates in PC and mobile activities in a recent edition of Technology Weekly.
The rocket is taking off…

According to Herve:

Online media growth:

  • Search is up 8% to 32m users
  • Photo sharing up 22% to 18m
  • Social networking is up 10% to 27m users in July 2008.

On the Mobile web:

  • Mobile search (via a browser) has grown 33% to 4m users
  • Uploading/sending photos via the internet has risen 23% to 7m
  • Social networking has increased by 190% to 3m users

Other growth areas in downloadable/browser services include email (including native/embedded email, up 26%), instant messaging (up 14%) and mobile map usage (up 76%).

The mobile growth, of course, is on a smaller base but the trajectory is impressive – and there are a lot more mobiles out there than PCs, so the ceiling is higher.
