dev.mobi goes mobile (again)

Hopefully you've all spotted the new mobiForge design. Just a few days later, we've dusted off a new mobile version too. Better a little late than never. Previously we used to redirect the user off to a whole different server for the mobile UI. This was a bad practice. What we've now done is create a module for our own CMS engine (we use Drupal) which recognises a mobile device's request on every page and sends a different theme accordingly...

New look for dev.mobi

If you're reading this, you should have noticed that the dev.mobi site looks a little different! We've given the theme a little bit of a lick of paint and restructured a few things. To be honest, we thought the old site was getting a little hard to navigate around, and the fixed-width theme didn't work so well for certain types of content...

Ericsson MobileFaces provides dotMobi template

The Ericsson Mobile JSF Kit provides a JSF library called "MobileFaces", which implements a reference solution for mobile-device-specific rendering for Java EE applications. MobileFaces can render different page content for different end devices based on just one JSF page. This highly reduces the amount of time needed for mobile application development...

Our tools make it into the mobile toolbox

Over at Read/WriteWeb there's an article on "The 85 Piece Mobile Search Tool Kit". We're pleased to see that a variety of dotMobi tools (including this site, http://ready.mobi, and our developer guide) have made it into the box! But there are also plenty of other resource in this list that you might find useful on your mobile development adventures. Enjoy!...

Site outage

There were a few hours of unscheduled downtime on dev.mobi this evening. Obviously, the fact that I've used the word 'unscheduled' suggests that we had to rather scramble to fix it. Our apologies for any inconvenience caused, and I believe we're now back at our usual level of service. We've got some exciting plans ahead for dev.mobi over the coming months - so stay tuned for a variety of improvements. (Not the least of which is a more frequent monitoring platform so we can catch things like this quicker!)...

Building a mobile site has never been easier

dotMobi wants to de-mystify the process of developing a mobile presence, and one of the ways we are trying to make this happen is through a partnership with Akmin. They've developed an extremely easy-to-use mobile site builder called MobiSiteGalore. Through the "Go Mobile" programme, this is something that our domain registrars offer to their customers...

I hope to see some of you there...

SXSW goes mobile

Cool .mobi site alert! We don't blog enough about great .mobi sites that we come across, so it's probably about time we should. http://sxsw.mobi is one that seems totally worthy of coverage. (South by Southwest is a series of media, film, and music festivals) As the site itself says, SXSW.mobi is "South by Southwest's new adventure in mobile content delivery". Being a Brit, I'm hoping the BBC gives it some coverage too...
