Mobile is playing a huge role in the way Olympics fans catch up on the latest news from London 2012, according to analysis of the stats by the official national broadcasters. Data does not include the weekend 4/5 August, when the athletics opened for business.
• BBC: mobile is 41 percent of Web activity.
The broadcaster for the Olympics host nation has seen 33 percent of browser activity via mobile phones. PC accounted for 56 percent, tablets 8 percent and connected TV 3 percent. Mobile browsing on the BBC Olympics site peaked on Wednesday (August 1) at 2.3 million as Bradley Wiggins won the cycling time trial. At weekends mobile browsing is higher at 39 percent, compared with 30 percent during the week – this will make it all the more interesting when stats become available for the weekend of 4/5 August, when Team GB picked up eight gold medals. The BBC has also seen 1.5 million downloads of its smartphone app.

• NBC: mobile Web site already nearly double Beijing games.
The official US Olympics broadcaster has seen 5.2 million unique visitors to m.nbcolympics.com (compared with 2.8 million for the whole Beijing games) and 7 million downloads of its NBC Olympics Live Extra app (for TV subscribers only) and 2.7 million downloads of its NBC Olympics app. Unique PC visitors to the Website was 31.5 million, which means the collective mobile audience – assuming no overlap between mobile Web and apps – would be approaching half of the PC audience.
The most popular event of the week was Tuesday night when Team USA took gold in the women’s gymnastics.
“We believed heading into these Games that if we could surround the consumer with as many touch points as possible — such as live streaming of every athletic competition online, on mobile and on tablet — then we could increase consumption and engagement, not only on digital, but on television as well,” said Gary Zenkel, president, NBC Olympics.

• Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium: 61 percent of digital traffic comes from mobile devices.
On Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium (COBMC)’s digital platforms 61 percent of the traffic has come from a mobile device, more than five times higher than the Canadian average. Almost 90 million page views to CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca and the mobile apps have come from mobile devices. The various mobile apps have been downloaded nearly 1 million times.
“The mobile traffic is staggering,” said Mark Silver, head of digital, COBMC in a statement, “Live sports trend toward mobile access, however, to have audiences engage with us via mobile platforms in such great numbers lets us know that these Games are really important to Canadians, and that they are staying with us for the action throughout the day.”
