What, no GPS?

Well we all knew it was possible: location by cell information. It's just that it hasn't really turned up in that many mainstream mobile applications. So hats off to Google with Maps for Mobile 2.0. They've managed to turn an already great application into quite simply one of the best, must-have free mobile applications available...

Low Fat or Full Fat, it’s still One Web

Well, doesn’t time fly? Just over a year ago I posted on One Web and what I think it means. A year or so later, what has changed? Well, firstly I think that there are a lot more made-for-mobile Web sites. Secondly, the term “One Web” continues to be used to describe the consumption of desktop oriented sites on mobile devices. For example, a post from Alan Patrick last weekend: there are currently 2 main schools of thought - (i) define a unique "mobile web", and (ii) make devices better at coping with existing web content. The problem with the mobile web option is the expenditure given the low pull through …...

SVG & Mobile

It has always surprised me that the mobile industry has not made better use of SVG. On the face of it, SVG is perfectly suited to publishing rich content on mobile devices for a number of reasons:It is a compact way of representing vector graphicsSVG graphics (in keeping with the name) can be scaled to arbitrary sizes, removing some of issues with screen dimension proliferation on mobile devices...

Planning Operator Mobile Portal

Almost every Mobile Operator, who are providing GPRS/Edge/3G etc services have their own mobile portal or they plan to have one as soon as possible. This operator mobile portal contributes a big part in that operator's data service revenue. The user experience of this portal has to be very comfortable for the users. Otherwise the tendency of user visit will be reduced causing the drop in the revenue. Here in this article I will try to focus on some of my thoughts and planning which I have implemented...

FOM – YAMC?

Having given it due reflection, I thought I’d record some thoughts about the “Future of Mobile” conference which took place on 14 November at the iMax Cinema in London. There are seemingly hundreds of mobile conferences at the moment, so was this “Yet Another Mobile Conference”, or was it “Yes! Amazing Memorable Content!”...

Regulatory Changes Can Increase Service Penetration

Every country has a Telecom Regulatory body which decides upon the strategic points to enhance the telecom penetration in their country. Most of time this regulatory body seems like the police force to the telecom operators. Because most of the regulations they prepare are mostly related to telecom business. Well that is OK though, but I think there can be taken some sort of regulation clauses which will deal with subscriber comfort and hence will increase the service penetration...

Lowering the Barriers

As a recent arrival at dotMobi, I am very pleased to be able to work with an organisation that has such a simple objective as "Work to reduce or remove the barriers to growth of the mobile web". Simple in the sense that it is simply defined, execution is another story. I think everyone is familiar with the principal barriers to growth, and dotMobi is making good progress in addressing many of them, some of it already visible, some of it still in the works...
