Define the mobile context
January 2, 2008, by jonarne
I do not like the term "one web"... It implies that there is a 1:1 relationship between mobile web and desktop web. That is misleading (my interpretation probably differs from yours as well) and causes unnecessary discussions. Jo Rabins post is very good and important, but should not have been necessary. Of course there is one web! Would be silly to build a brand new one just for handheld devices. However, the point is; don't think your desktop web site will work on mobile, don't copy your desktop web site onto the mobile, don't set up brand new infrastructure only for the mobile... Read More
2007 presentations round up
January 2, 2008, by atrasatti
During 2007 I had the fun and honor of presenting at quite a few events around Europe. I already spoke about a few of them and most presentations have already been provided on the appropriate sites. Anyway I wanted to have a single place to collect my presentations, so thanks to Giulio (A.K.A. giulivo) I have a directory on our company site... Read More

User Agent Switcher config file
December 19, 2007, by ronan
Chris Pederick's User Agent Switcher is an essential Firefox add-on for anybody in the business of creating mobile web sites. We've talked about this before but it is worth mentioning again. This little add-on lets your Firebox (or Flock / Mozilla / Seamonkey) emulate a mobile device in its requests by sending a configurable User-Agent string. I've attached a config file to this post that contains the correct UA strings for a few common phones and the W3C Default Delivery Context. This will save you the trouble of finding the correct strings yourself... Read More
Find favicons
December 12, 2007, by Cyril
The favorites icon, that little icon displayed next to the URL bar in most PC browsers, can be quite useful for mobile. It allows identification of a site in only 16x16 pixels and just hundreds of bytes. Most favicons are unique, and despite being too small to accommodate text or a complex logo-type, users can identify a site more quickly by its favicon than by reading the URL... Read More
Revenue Share Model over Content Business Value Chain
December 12, 2007, by svo9712
In the Mobile Content Business value chain there are several parties (ie. Telecom Operator, Platform Vendor, Content Aggregator, Content Owner or Creator, Content Sponsor etc) involved nowadays. Everyone is involved here for their own benefits. From my experience I have seen that the operator tries to lower their CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) as well as the OPEX (Operational Expenditure). Hence Revenue Share business model came in the scene to satisfy all the related parties. Here in this article I will not just try to describe on the Revenue Share Business Model but also will try explore some concept on the Expenditure share model... Read More

We have just published another extract from Cameron Moll's excellent book, Mobile Web Design. (Thanks Cameron!) In this next installment from the chapter "Beyond Simple XHTML Pages", topics covered include SVG, Flash Lite, and Location Awareness. Feels like a bit of an SVG-fest here lately, but as Ronan points out, maybe quite a few of us could be paying more attention to this technology... Read More
Mobile Web Design – Beyond Simple XHTML Pages II
December 10, 2007, by cameronmoll
SVG, or Scalable Vector Graphics, is "a language for describing two-dimensional graphics and graphical applications in XML."3 Or in English, SVG enables a designer to render vector images and animations within the browser using numerical coordinates rather than pixels. SVG Tiny is a baseline profile of SVG, implementable on a range of devices, and described by the W3C thusly:... Read More

SVG and the Mobile Web
December 5, 2007, by ronan
It has always surprised me that the mobile industry has not made better use of SVG. SVG is very well suited to publishing rich content on mobile devices for a number of reasons: compact, lightweight, open standard, reasonably good device support. We've just published an article on mobiForge that summarises the capabilities of SVG and how best to take advantage of it for mobile web applications.Link... Read More
