The Webby Awards 2014 the award-winning mobile campaigns with video case studies

Congratulations Webby winners, if you haven’t already, please send a summary of your winning entry, including evidence of success, and links to your case studies/videos and award entry to editor (at) mobiThinking.com.

Awards: The Webby Awards a.k.a. The Webbys.
Founded: 1996, mobile category started in 2007.
Deadline for entries: December each year.
Entry fee: US $295.
Number of entries: N/A.
Winners announced: May each year.
Prize: Webby Award.
Categories include (in 2014): Best practices; Device camera; Location; Mobile video; User experience; Visual Design; Urban innovation; Connected products; Education; Entertainment; Events; Experimental & innovation; Games; Guides; Health; Integrated experience; Lifestyle; Music; News; Shopping; Social; Sports; Travel; Utilities; Mobile ads; AR.
mobiThinking verdict: In the seven years mobile has featured at the Webby Awards, the number of categories has ballooned, which suggests it attracts plenty of entrants (but we’re not told how many). There’s a Webby Award winner – chosen by the judges – and a People’s Voice Winner – where the general public and/or friends of the entrants can vote for their choice (shortlisted companies only) for each category – that doubles the chance of winning, but does this dilute the kudos of a Webby Award?
If you were expecting best practice mobile Websites at the Webbys, you will be disappointed. Despite the name and heritage, the mobile categories at the Webby Awards have been overrun by native apps. There are some international entries, but mostly this is a US event. Often the same winners appear in successive years.
In 2013 the Webby’s brought in a new Awards Gallery, which is flashy, but not very user friendly (ironically). There are no descriptions or videos of entries and links to case studies are rare, so in most cases we don’t know why the winners won.
Most of the videos/descriptions below were sourced by mobiThinking.

The 2014 Webby Mobile Awards winners

Best practices

Webby Award winner: The NYTimes mobile app. Experience The Times’s award-winning journalism, elegantly redesigned with enhanced imagery and multimedia, clean design and streamlined navigation. Now with AirDrop for article sharing.
People’s Voice winner: BBC News languages on mobile. As well as English, the BBC runs news websites in 27 languages. The past 12 months has seen a program of launching these World Service sites in a responsive framework that optimizes our pages on all phones. In many countries, mobile is the primary means of accessing the internet. We now have 15 news language sites in responsive: Hausa, Indonesian, Afrique, Hindi, Mundo, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Vietnamese, Brasil, Azeri, Gahuza, Swahili and Kyrgyz. The program continues into 2014. In many cases, the move to responsive has led to a sharp and immediate rise in unique visitors. In the 12 weeks after the switch on the Haua (Nigerian) site, unique visits rose by 57 percent. Hindi saw a rise of 37 percent across the same period, and Arabic 24 percent. The move to responsive presents several challenges: a) As well as Latin scripts, we have Cyrillic and Arabic right-to-left scripts. Some services, such as Burmese are entirely unique so require a lot of UX and development. b) The technological capabilities in our territories vary wildly. Many do not have smartphones. Our responsive sites work on all phones, all the way down to 240px wide, ensuring all our users get a stable, working news product no matter where they are. c) We are working with thousands of journalists around the world. Ensuring we meet their needs and requirements is a complex and labor-intensive process. Every component we build has to work in every language and the needs of one site are very different to the next, so while one site may publish a single news story a day and lots of radio programming, another will publish lots of text and video.

Best connected products

Webby Award winner: Use me leave me — Tweeting bicycles at SXSW. Razorfish. Every year, Austin, Texas hosts 200,000 people from 80 countries for the interactive, film and music festival known as SXSW. There are plenty of free concerts and drinks, but there’s one major thing lacking: convenient transportation. As residents of Austin, we thought, how can we help? What about bikes? So we decided to try an experiment. What if the bikes were free for anyone to use? Better yet, what if each bike had a name, personality, and twitter handle? We wondered, would people treat public property differently if they knew it by name? Introducing Use Me Leave Me — an experiment in technology, transportation, and above all — social behavior. We outfitted each bike with batteries, lights, GPS, and solar panels. We created unique personalities for all 20 bikes, and they tweeted… where they were, how long they waited, where their riders should go, their love of great weather, and when they were damaged… they let us know that, too. Not every bike was treated with care…and a few got lost or stolen… but most of the bikes survived the weather, the people, and even the late-night parties. Telling us that people might treat public property better when there is a little humanity involved.

Education & reference

Sub category: Education for handheld devices
Webby Award winner: TXTBKS. DDB. In developed countries, tablets and e-readers have become the solution to large, heavy textbooks. But for Philippine public school students, even the cheapest model is worth more than what their families make in an entire month. What if we could use these millions of old phones to create a new brand of textbook? Smart, the Philippines’ largest telecom, took their mission to “make text light and easy” further than ever as we introduced Smart TXTBKS. Over six months, we collaborated with respected textbook authors and publishers to refine official school texts into 160-character text messages. These were then programmed into the inboxes of thousands of inactive surplus sim cards. Which were then repackaged into brand new Smart TXTBKS. So it turned even the oldest analog phones into a new kind of e-reader. And old text sim cards into a new brand of textbook. We launched it in partner schools that needed it most. And just a quarter after, this simple—and, in fact, low-tech—solution had made a profound, sustainable impact. With school bags 50 percent lighter, attendance was 95 percent while average test performance was 90 percent during the implementation period. And with petitions and pledges from schools and education sector members, TXTBKS is going even further, with plans underway for more subjects and grade levels; kits so schools can reproduce as many TXTBKS as they need for free; and a roll-out across the entire Philippines. Fulfilling Smart’s mission to make text light and easy for all.

People’s Voice winner: Lifesaver: A revolutionary new way to learn CPR. Resuscitation Council UK and UNIT9. An estimated 60,000 people each year in the UK have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and, sadly, less than 10 percent of those people will survive. Yet, if a bystander is able to start CPR they could double a person’s chances of survival. LIFESAVER is a crisis simulator, which fuses interactivity and live-action film to teach CPR in a new way, on your computer, smartphone or tablet. Guiding the user through three CPR situations, Lifesaver’s users are expected to react within time limits, showing consistency throughout each section and are scored at the end of each gameplay scenario.

Events

Webby Award winner: Trick Track SapientNitro. The X Games are watched by millions worldwide. But only a few of these viewers are skating, snowboarding, and action sports experts. Which means that, to most casual fans, the trick names called out during a run might as well be in a foreign language. Challenge: decode the tricks of X Games so that casual sports fans could understand what they were watching and become bigger fans. We created Trick Track, a feature of the new XGames.com and X Games apps which uses real-time data and 3D models to display an athlete’s run as it happens – listing tricks by name and giving fans a simple explanation of what they actually mean. How it works: An athlete executes a trick. The trick is mapped against a 3D model of the course. And users can then choose a trick to get an explanation—which takes something like a “Double McTwist 1260” and simplifies it to “2 flips and 3.5 spins.” All in real time. Trick Track appeared as a key feature on the new XGames.com and the new X Games mobile and tablet apps. It helped raise site visits by 72 percent, page views by 99 percent, and time spent by 57 percent. But more importantly, it also opened the door for a whole new set of casual viewers to actually understand why X Games athletes are so incredible.

Project Loon is a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters. Project Loon balloons float in the stratosphere, twice as high as airplanes and the weather. In the stratosphere, there are many layers of wind, and each layer of wind varies in direction and speed. Loon balloons go where they’re needed by rising or descending into a layer of wind blowing in the desired direction of travel. People can connect to the balloon network using a special Internet antenna attached to their building. The signal bounces from this antenna up to the balloon network, and then down to the global Internet on Earth.
